romans 10:8 17 commentary

i. Romans 10:17, NLT: So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ. All through this section Paul has been driving home the personal responsibility of the Jews. The apostle refers to Isaiah to show that God would "lay in Zion a stumbling-stone." But this is the very thing that has happened, as it stands written: "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring the good news of good things. Verse 19. But the righteousness which is of faith speaks like this, Don't say in your heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? Jesus in the garden prayed, "Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me." This is precisely what salvation does not mean; and I would strongly press it on all that hear me, more particularly on those that have to do with the work of the Lord, and of course ardently desire to labour intelligently; and this not alone for the conversion, but for the establishment and deliverance of souls. But oh, thank God we have a message to tell to the nations. Now observe, first, that the gospel claims to be like the law in its clearness. Great preachers have known this. Who bring glad tidings of good things!. How are they to hear without someone to proclaim the good news to them? The expression means that righteousness which God can afford to display because of Christ's atonement. His witness to our spirit is this, that we are children of God. (a) It is the normal title of respect like the English sir, the French monsieur, the German herr. And she gives me the worst time because she knows how totally she has me wrapped around her little finger. So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God: Saving faith comes through hearing by the word of God. Alas! But even if it were not already broken, should we get through to-morrow with its temptations, bearing such a heart as we have within us, without breaking that perfect and spotless law? why am I still under bondage and misery from the constant evil of my nature, over which I seem to have no power whatever? (that is, to bring, Christ down from above:) or, Who shall descend into the deep? Verse 20. Here you have it, "Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved." The whole passage Romans 9:1-33; Romans 10:1-21; Romans 11:1-36 is a condemnation of the Jewish attitude to religion. He quotes also from Isaiah "Whosoever believeth on Him shall not be ashamed." The words, which we preach, are added, that no one might have the suspicion that Paul differed from Moses; for he testifies, that in the ministration of the gospel there was complete consent between him and Moses; inasmuch as even Moses placed our felicity in nothing else but in the gratuitous promise of divine favor. It became simply a question whether, in fact, God did call Gentiles, or whether He had revealed such intentions. This is further illustrated (Romans 10:10; Romans 10:10), and the order inverted, because there must first be faith in the heart before there can be an acceptable confession with the mouth. "Christ's Prayer for his People.". Now, what Paul declared of the Jew then is still true today. But after the flood man as such was put under certain conditions the whole race. If His grace attract, His truth humbles, and leaves no room for vain boasting and self-confidence. 2. It is close to you; it is as close as your mouth. God has brought him again from the dead and exalted him at his own right hand, and this is not for himself, but for all those who trust in him. But now it is "the wrath of God from heaven;" and consequently it is in view of eternal things, and not of those that touch present life on the earth. Where lies the value of belonging to the circumcised people of God? Oh, my bearer, our salvation lies in this! The language of faith says, Do nothing. To the contrary, the salvation of God is as near them as their own mouths and hearts. In his final sermon, Moses made some other points. We should not ignore how scandalously simple this is (whoever calls upon the name of the LORD shall be saved) and what an affront this is to every attempt of the flesh to be justified or any attempt to find salvation based on national or ethnic foundation. Clearly, then, such ground is untenable. For "every one who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.". In Romans 7:1-25 we have the subject of the law discussed for practice as well as in principle, and there again meet with the same weapon of tried and unfailing temper. Thus the second man looks to excitements and feelings just as the first looked to works and self-denials. The legal institutions were associated with temporal judgment. Is he one of those that we elected? Suppose you cannot walk on the sea, like Peter: never mind; you are not called to do it. Rema is different from the law or works of the law because faith informs "the word.". Concerning profession: It is with the mouth that confession is made--confession to God in prayer and praise (Romans 15:6; Romans 15:6), confession to men by owning the ways of God before others, especially when we are called to it in a day of persecution. An Italian gentleman, who has known me since I have been at Mentone, was asked, "Are you a Catholic?" Anyone who thinks that justification by faith is a new concept needs to re-study the Old Testament and the book of Romans. Now listen. It didnt surprise God or His prophets. Click to enable/disable Google reCaptcha. As used by Moses in this place, it evidently means that his doctrines were in their mind, or were a subject of meditation and reflection. III. Compare Peter's use in1 Peter 2:10; 1 Peter 2:10. It seems to mean that his truth was in their mind, and a subject of meditation and reflection. There is a preaching which blasts the sinner with tempestuously angry words; but always Paul speaks the truth in love. It is done. What were the principles of it? Confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus: We can never forget all that it meant to say that Jesus Christ is Lord. and therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness. Though it directs us to a better and more effectual righteousness in Christ, yet in itself, considered as a law abstracted from its respect to Christ and the gospel (for so the unbelieving Jews embraced and retained it), it owneth nothing as a righteousness sufficient to justify a man but that of perfect obedience. 4). Being Pure, blazing, glorious Godhead, "Light of lights, very God of very God," on a sudden they found him in a stable hanging on a woman's breast. The use of the law was to direct people for righteousness to Christ. You see how simple God has made it? The word abyss (abussos) is usually found in the book of Revelation (Revelation 9:1-2; Revelation 9:11; Revelation 11:7; Revelation 17:8; Revelation 20:1; Revelation 20:3). Eleazar the priest was brought before Antiochus Epiphanes whose aim was to stamp out Jewish religion. First, We need not go to heaven, to search the records there, or to enquire into the secrets of the divine counsel. All then that believe, though uncircumcised, might claim him as father, assured that righteousness will be reckoned to them too. We believe and receive. (1-3) Israels refusal to submit to the righteousness of God. I have had almost thirty years among you, and God has been very gracious to us, so that we have lost very few comparatively by death; but now many are going home, and, according to the course of nature, many of our honored brethren and sisters will soon follow. We are not put to climb for it--it is not in heaven; we are not put to dive for it--it is not in the deep. What is the righteousness which is of the law? The way of the law was not easy. "Doubts," he said, "what do you mean? There would be no remnant if justice took its course. But "justification of life" goes farther, though involved in the latter, than the end of Romans 4:1-25; for now we learn that in the gospel there is not only a dealing with the guilt of those that are addressed in it; there is also a mighty work of God in the presenting the man in a new place before God, and in fact, too, for his faith, clearing him from all the consequences in which he finds himself as a man in the flesh here below. Jesus had come and died; Jesus had been a propitiatory sacrifice; Jesus had borne the judgment of God because of the sins He bore. The consequences are thus pursued; first, the general place of the believer now, in all respects, in relation to the past, the present, and the future. And I was mad because I had been trying so long to do it and tie ends together. But Paul makes it clear: There is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. Verse 21. He fell and a soldier kicked him. If salvation for man is possible by any other means, if man can be saved by the law, if man can be saved by his own efforts, by his good works, if a man can be saved by sincerity, then, God, let this cup pass from Me. But what does it say? Christ's work of redemption deserves that God should act as He does in the gospel. They become angry and envious when they see their supposedly ignorant Gentile neighbours accepting the gospel, but they themselves will not listen to it (19-21). For, essentially associated as He is with the glory of God the Father, the full deliverance of souls from the realm of death was His also. This blessed faith keeps men down when they are apt to go up, and up when otherwise they would be apt to go down. Verse 9 seems to be directly connected to Deuteronomy 30:14 (it may be helpful to read this verse a second time). It can mean many things such as: 1. He shall own that once glorious seat of royalty in Israel. Just as the sun in the heavens is not for one people or land alone, no more is the gospel. If you were to be saved by the law you should have begun without sin, continued without sin, and then it would be needful to end without sin. Is It Ok for Christians to Follow Zodiac Signs? "The righteousness which is of faith," or believing, "speaketh on this wise, Say not in thy heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? You must carefully guard against the notion of its being a question of Paul's own experience, because he says, "I had not known," "I was alive," etc. This was not suitable to the character of the epistle; but the glory of God he does. (14-15) The necessity of the preaching of the gospel. But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? It is not said to be revealed in the gospel. Their zeal was not according to knowledge. I believe that whoever you are, chosen or not, predestined or not, if you will call upon the name of the Lord you will be saved. Inductive Bible study on Romans chapter 10. Back when Jay Leno was hosted the Tonight Show, he frequently did "man-on-the street" interviews. Thus, having shown the Gentile in Romans 1:1-32 manifestly wrong, and hopelessly degraded to the last degree having laid bare the moral dilettantism of the philosophers, not one whit better in the sight of God, but rather the reverse having shown the Jew overwhelmed by the condemnation of the divine oracles in which he chiefly boasted, without real righteousness, and so much the more guilty for his special privileges, all now lies clear for bringing in the proper Christian message, the. For the Jew stumbling at Jesus Christ going about by works trying to establish a righteousness before God.Paul declares they just haven't made it and can't make it for they have not submitted themselves to the righteousness of God and Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone that believes. Paul ably demonstrated in the first several chapters of Romans how futile this is. Thirdly, let us consider, WHAT THE SCRIPTURE SAITH; "Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed." (1.) (iii) But a man must not only believe in his heart; he must confess with his lips. The word of God is to be close to the heart of every Christian. He did not say, "Do and thou shalt live, and yet there is another way." We have all that we need to find salvation and be blessed by God. But how, argues he, could this stand, seeing that Abraham had another son, just as much his child as Isaac? Because for He has revealed Himself to us. Faith in God means believing in and trusting in the greatest hopethat God became man, lived a perfect life, died a sacrificial death for your sins, and rose again to glory so that you could have. This is as certain and clear as the utterance of that dreadful roll of thunder which has just now left on your minds the thought, "He that doeth these things shall live by them.". Yes, God has chosen and elected and predestined. Believe in Christ as you would believe in your friend: believe that he died for sinners, and trust in him for salvation. In thy heart - The word heart is very variously used in the sacred Scriptures. If you trust in him with your heart, trust him openly, and confess him with your mouth, owning that he is your Lord, and your Savior. But Paul makes it clear: There is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. Throw thyself upon him now; even as a babe casts itself upon its mother's breast. By proceeding, you consent to our cookie usage. 1. But the righteousness which stems from faith speaks like this--"Do not say in your heart, 'Who shall go up into heaven?' Look to him and salvation is thine. Accordingly Romans 8:1-39 pursues in the most practical manner the liberty wherewith Christ has made us free. And their words to the ends of the world.. Paul had no difficulty in granting that, but the zeal was misdirected and misapplied. II. - That is, what is the language of the doctrine of justification by faith? At this point we enter upon a most important part of the epistle, on which we must dwell for a little. He believed God and His word, with special approval on God's part; and his faith was counted as righteousness (ver. If you are to be saved by the commandments you must do them: that is clear. That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. is the double prophecy. Be he Jew or be he Gentile, his only righteousness by law must come through the doing of the law. It is our duty that we must not, it is our privilege that we shall not, be ashamed of our faith in Christ. Basically the scheme is this--in the previous passage Paul has been saying that the way to God is not that of works and of legalism, but of faith and trust. Rightly does Paul take this as granted; for the doctrine of the law does by no means render the conscience quiet and calm, nor supply it with what ought to satisfy it. Oh, let's all get our climbing ropes and let's all climb into heaven and let's bring the Messiah down. (16-17) The testimony of Isaiah 53:10. Now that God has revealed Himself in the gospel, it is not what will suit man on earth, but what is worthy of the presence of the glory of God. (d) In the Greek translation of the Hebrew Scriptures it is the regular translation of the divine name, Jahveh or Jehovah. Oh, how nice you look today. The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart. Instead of having to go to great lengths to achieve righteousness by the law, we can immediately receive righteousness by faith, by trusting in the word of the gospel. He know what he did know, and to that he held fast, Well, they must take him into the church; they could not well refuse a man with such a confession of faith; and when he was in the church, walking with the brethren, he was happier than the rest of them, at which they greatly marvelled, and one said to him, "Brother Jack, don't you sometimes feel doubts and fears? As he whom we sorrow for today could die peacefully, and even merrily, so shall you and I if we rely on the same Savior. Now it is the positive power of God in raising up from the dead Him that was delivered for our offences, and raised again for our justifying. Once, again, though your faith should only be strong enough to lead you to pray, yet it shall save you, for "Whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved." (c) It is the normal title of the Greek gods, prefaced before the god's name. It would not have been righteous in any sense to have remitted the sins, until they were actually borne by One who could and did suffer for them. Having received, having heard, having known the grace of God through Jesus Christ, we are now obligated to let the world know of that same grace.I have a very good friend, Keith Erickson, whom I love in the Lord. Christianity is belief plus confession; it involves witness before men. "Are you a Protestant?" This phrase, , "the word of faith", may be seen in the Jewish writings z; and this shows what word is here meant, even the Gospel so called, because it contains doctrines which are to be believed upon the testimony of God, and particularly the doctrine of justification by the righteousness of Christ received by faith; and because it proposes Christ as the object of faith, and encourages souls to believe in him for life and salvation; and is also the means of begetting and implanting faith in the heart, and without it the preaching of it is of no avail: and it is further described by the ministration of it. God has given us His word. Because if you know God well you will have no problem trusting in Him at all.How can you know God? The inner man is dealt with, and searched through and through. Let me call your attention again to its force. Romans 10 - Israel's Present Rejection of God A. Israel's rejection of the gospel of salvation through Jesus Christ. The past history of Israel was sketched inRomans 9:1-33; Romans 9:1-33; the present more immediately is before us inRomans 10:1-21; Romans 10:1-21. (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead. It seems incredible that a man should die like that for a law like that. Its remarkable that Paul found something good to say about these Jewish people who persecuted him so mercilessly. So faith comes by hearing, hearing by the Word of God. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. And he says to Israel: "All the day I have stretched out my hands to a people who are disobedient and contrary.". Their opposition to the gospel is from a principle of respect to the law, which they know to have come from God. Isaiah says: "I was found of them who sought me not; I was made manifest unto them that asked not after me." It was for her he cared, and for those about him as for himself, all was rest. The scope of the apostle in this part of the chapter is to show the vast difference between the righteousness of the law and the righteousness of faith, and the great pre-eminence of the righteousness of faith above that of the law; that he might induce and persuade the Jews to believe in Christ, aggravate the folly and sin of those that refused, and justify God in the rejection of such refusers. "Righteousness" never means mercy, not even the "righteousness of God." "The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart," that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim: 9 If you declare with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. If he had to die, his fathers would receive him "holy and pure." There is no need to bring Christ down to find out what God wants. A disobedient and contrary people: This tells Gods assessment of disobedient, Messiah-rejecting Israel. This knowledge was readily available and known to all. First, as to practical holiness, it is not merely that Christ has died for my sins, but that even in the initiatory act of baptism the truth set forth there is that I am dead. Those that were under the law were to do all themselves, Do this, and live; but the gospel discovers the greatest part of the work done already, and what remains cut short in righteousness, salvation offered upon very plain and easy terms, brought to our door, as it were, in the word which is nigh us. Here we pass out of the introduction of the epistle. For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge ( Romans 10:1-2 ). He suffered agonizing pain, but his peace was as deep as the sea. Let me refer in passing to a few points more in the introduction, in order to link them together with that which the Spirit was furnishing to the Roman saints, as well as to show the admirable perfectness of every word that inspiration has given us. It is important to note, however, that Paul does not quote Moses. Moses is saying that God's law is not inaccessible and impossible; it is there in a man's mouth and life and heart. Yet note, that Paul opens this up into two things. The appeal to their own inspired account of Abraham turned into a proof of the consistency of God's ways in justifying by faith, and hence in justifying the uncircumcised no less than the circumcision. It is for the saints to learn, of course; but it is that which goes out in its own force and necessary aim to the need of man a divine righteousness, which justifies instead of condemning him who believes. This is the key word of early Christianity. I assure you that I daily find the value of living by faith. II. It is not here a question of how a man is to be saved, but of God's indispensable moral judgment, which the gospel, instead of weakening asserts according to the holiness and truth of God. I do say this for them--that they do have a zeal for God, but it is not a zeal which is based on a real knowledge. The Rock of Ages never fails. We also do not need people to enter into heaven to learn Gods will since this information is revealed in His word. It is an appeal to listen to the prophets who long ago declared that faith is the only way to God, and that that way is open to every man. A voice cries "Who shall ascend into heaven?" Christ did not come to make the law milder, or to render it possible for our cracked and battered obedience to be accepted as a sort of compromise. Israel is indeed the only people of whom there is always a portion that believe. It is exquisite the delicate love with which he singles out distinctive features in each of the saints, men and women, that come before him. You say, "Who shall descend into the deep?" Two things are required as conditions of salvation:-- (a.) Justification is not from works of law. To this day there are strict orthodox Jews in this country who will not poke or mend a fire on the Sabbath or switch on a light. What was it? For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Nederlandstalige Bijbelstudies door Stan Marinussen. It was not merely "to those at Rome," but "to you that be at Rome." The apostle shows them with astonishing force at the starting-point that he was far from slighting their privileges. It is sinful shame that makes people deny Christ, Mark 8:38. It is just as clear as ever the law was, and quite as sharply distinct. Does this sort of faith enable men to face death with courage? The strength and sincerity of his desire. There is no hope for man otherwise; for the gospel is not all that is now made known. No, you must not: the gospel is simple; salvation is as plain as a pikestaff; familiar an homespun; easy as the A B C of your childhood. Such has been their singular fruit of promise; such even in the midst of all their misery it is at present. yet, that is might be the more effectual to drive people to Christ and to make the covenant of grace welcome, it had a very great mixture of the strictness and terror of the covenant of works. The apostle is therefore plainly in presence of the broadest possible grounds of comparison, though we shall find more too. His pathway follows; and he shows that the very troubles of the road become a distinct matter of boast. for what follow are manifestly his words, in Deuteronomy 30:14. the word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart; which is to be understood not of the law, for Moses himself is not speaking of the law only, but either of the whole word of God, both law and Gospel; or particularly of the Gospel, which holds forth those special blessings and promises of grace, pardon of sin, and circumcision of the heart, which are mentioned in the context, as what should be bestowed upon the people of the Jews in the latter days; and so is rightly applied by the apostle to the then dispensation, and is to be understood of the Gospel; which was nigh both in the ministration of it, by the apostles, to Jews and Gentiles, and in the application and experience of it; it was not only "in the mouth" of the preachers, but also of the hearers of it, by a hearty and sincere confession; and "in [their] hearts", being attended with the power of God, and received in the love of it, was truly believed in, and cordially embraced; that is, the word of faith. Thus the introduction opened with Christ's person, and closes with God's righteousness. It was about eating pork. But I say, have they not heard? ii. Though Paul preached against them, yet he prayed for them. So God's grace and mercy extended towards the Gentiles. But they are not even doing the works that God requires in the offering of a sacrifice. The excellency of the gospel above the law. God has condemned the flesh. His sons and daughters will tell you that his death was sad to them, but not to him. 7). or who hath first liven to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? There is no mystery or obscurity about it. Pauls intent here is to use the same words to express the same idea about the gospel instead of the law. This plainly shows that Christ's descent into the deep, or into hades, was no more than his going into the state of the dead, in allusion to Jonah. Observe. It is against the "unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness." As no keeper of the law would have been lost on any ground whatever, so no believer in Christ shall be lost on any ground whatever; as no breaker of the law could escape punishment, so no unbeliever in Christ can he saved. No man could believe this who did not also believe all the truths dependent on it. Read this verse, "All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out." Along with this he gathers testimonies from more than one prophet. Grace in the soul is its new nature; the soul is alive to God, and has begun its holy happiness which shall endure for ever. But what saith it? Romans 4:1-8,13-17. But that wasnt their only problem. This believing, or trusting, is the whole of the matter, and neither heaven above nor the abyss beneath will ever reveal another salvation. This time Paul quotes Psalms 19:4: "Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world." For his sake let me tell it again. Moses does not allow any person to dream that under the law he can be saved in any other way than by perfect obedience thereto. In Romans 14:1-23 and the beginning ofRomans 15:1-33; Romans 15:1-33 we have the delicate theme of Christian forbearance in its limits and largeness. i. When we confess the Lord Jesus, we agree with what God said about Jesus, and with what Jesus said about Himself. From verse 14 there is an advance. If you get out on the extreme and, unfortunately, some people do. For Christ is the end of the whole system of law. Ah, then the heart foolishly cries, "I must know a great deal; as much as if I had been to heaven and seen for myself, or as if I had dived into the depths and made discoveries there." Christ holds it out to you: take it freely, and be rich for ever. He can be yours through faith right where you are (6-8).
